Known locally as MERCY Yemen (Middle East Relief and Cooperation Yemen) our organisation aims to improve the health and economic situation in a participatory and gender-sensitive way through training and empowering nationals, so that they take more responsibility for their own health and environment, prevention of diseases and facilitating income generation. Assisting especially disadvantaged people groups like women and the handicapped, we want to concentrate on people and not on technology to find sustainable solutions for their problems
The strategy for this project is to follow a demand driven approach which responds to the local communities requests and needs. This project addresses the severe health and economic problems of the rural area of Haudraumaut, Yemen.
The project will focus on community based health and socio-economic development such as: community health education, reduction of adult illiteracy especially among females, assistance and training for local handicapped people, as well as food and medical aid relief programs. A key component of this is also poverty reduction which includes: initiating micro-enterprise businesses to generate income and jobs, developing vegetable house gardens and small animal farming to improve a poor family's nutrition.
