After eight full academic years in the 2008-2009 academic year, OMIF India was running 90 Dalit Education Centres in 19 Indian States, with a total of more than 18,000 students from Kindergarten through to Grade Ten. There are over 1000 staff teaching at these Schools. Over 1500 communities have been influenced by the education and development activities done by DEC staff. Most DECs have community-based activities for both children and adults of all ages. Such activities include the following:
Self-Help Groups: 34 DEC schools have started one or more self-help groups in their area. In total these schools are now running 434 Self Help Groups with over 6800 participants. Other DECs are doing survey work for future groups.
Women's Empowerment Meetings: These meetings are held several times a year by many of the DEC teams.
Medical Assistance: Five schools run full time clinics in conjunction with the DEC schools. All schools run at least one medical camp per year, in addition to providing regular medical checkups for all students.
Community Health Workers have been located in 30 DEC locations and this new team has gone through two intensive training programs.
Vocational Training: 69 vocational training centers are now in operation. The main focus has been on tailoring training and computer training. New initiatives continue to be developed in areas such as driver's training, spoken English classes, solar lamps assembly, candle making, and jam making were successfully introduced. New courses on welding, carpentry, manufacturing of hollow bricks and vermin composting are being planned.
Literacy Classes: At least 6 schools have literacy programmes.
