There is a growing health care initiative being implemented by Community Health Workers who will eventually be based at each DEC school. Their main focus is on the health and wellbeing of the children attending the schools, their extended families and the wider community. The CHWs will be involved in dealing with many of the easily preventable health issues common to poor communities. The community Health workers will eventually be linked to a network of regional and mobile clinics. There are currently around 30 trained Community Health Workers who have been placed at DEC schools along with, 5 regional clinics and 2 mobile clinics in operation.
In 2009 10 Community Health Workers were funded through RED International with a grant received from the Isle of Man Government - Overseas Aid Committee.
Two Mobile Clinics were set up with funding received from BUPA Giving.
It is the intention that each Dalit Education Centre will eventually be equipped with audio visual equipment and show a variety of government sponsored DVDs covering topics such as health and hygiene, disease prevention, AIDS awareness and family planning. By showing these educational films to the Dalit-Bahujan children we aim to bring empowerment and transformation to their community. At present we are proceeding with health and hygiene education at various levels in each centre.
